How to Create an Ergonomic Home Office: Your Step-by-Step Checklist
Working from home is here to stay for many of us, but spending long hours in front of a screen without the right setup can lead to back pain, tired eyes, and a drop in focus. The good news? With a few smart choices, you can design a home office that feels comfortable, looks good, and keeps you productive.
Here’s our simple checklist for creating an ergonomic workspace that works for you:
1. Pick the Right Desk Layout
- Single desk for straightforward work and minimal distractions.
- L-shaped desk if you need extra space for multiple tasks or screens.
- Compact desk + wall storage for smaller rooms without feeling cramped.
Tip: Keep your desk clutter-free to stay focused.
2. Choose an Ergonomic Chair
- Look for a chair with great recline range & support to protect your lower back.
- Adjustable height and seat depth so your feet rest flat on the floor and your thighs are well supported.
- Adjustable armrests to keep your shoulders relaxed.
A good chair should follow your body’s natural curves and make long hours more comfortable.
(Here is our full guide about task chairs based on the number of hours you spend working in a day)
3. Set the Perfect Desk Height
- Your elbows should be at a 90-degree angle (or slightly more) when typing.
- Too high? You’ll strain your shoulders. Too low? Your wrists suffer.
- Consider an adjustable standing desk to switch between sitting and standing during the day. Plus you can adjust it to keep your arm in a neutral position when sitting.
4. Position Your Monitor Correctly
- Top of the screen at or slightly below eye level.
- Arm’s length away from your face to avoid eye strain.
- Reduce glare by avoiding direct light from windows or overheads.
5. Keep Your Keyboard and Mouse Comfortable
- Start with adjusting your desk (or seat) height, to bring the work surface as close to your lap as possible. Then adjust the position of the mouse and keyboard. Place them within easy reach to avoid stretching your arms.
- Try an ergonomic keyboard or mouse if you experience wrist discomfort.
- A wrist rest can help keep your hands in a neutral position.
6. Get the Lighting Right
- Natural light is ideal—place your desk near a window if possible.
- Use warm-toned bulbs/LED for softer, eye-friendly light.
- Combine ambient and task lighting to avoid shadows and glare.
8. Keep Your Space Organized
- Use cable clips or under-desk trays to control wires.
- Keep frequently used items within reach.
- Add shelves, drawers, or small storage units to keep things tidy.
9. Move Throughout the Day
- Alternate between sitting and standing.
- Take short breaks to stretch or walk every hour.
- A quick reset keeps your body and mind fresh.
10. Make It Yours
- Add plants for fresh air and a calming vibe.
- Choose colors and decor that make you feel good.
- Create a clear separation between work and relaxation areas—especially if you work in a small space.
PRO TIP: Use a monitor arm to support your screen and give you the freedom of movement you have never imagined. A good monitor arm is your chair’s best friend and your posture’s guardian.
